MoMo #15 - Sustainability in mobile - status, challenges & possibilities

2012-06-18 / Museum of Natural History in Vienna, Burgring 7, 1010 Wien

Everybody can be lean and green

Although there were 34 degrees outside people came to MoMo #15 to discuss with experts the matter of sustainability in mobile, the status, challenges & possibilities. The MoMo started with a presentation from Südwind according working conditions in India. Christina Schröder and her team have talked to workers on site. She also mentioned that the labor cost ratio is about 1% of the product itself and that we cannot talk about “faire” phones at the moment.

Cloud computing uses more energy than India

After the talk of working condition Claudia Sprinz from Greenpeace showed facts and figures of the energy consumption. In comparison with the top energy-consuming countriesAlpha cloud computing is on the 5th place and uses more energy than India. But the important fact is where the energy is come from. The aim of Greenpeace in this area is to force more and more companies to use renewable energy for their data center. But not only big companies need to act, in the smart2020 guide everybody can find methods how to avoid up to 15% CO2.

Carbon neutral within the next 12 month

Later on Microsoft gave insights in their lean, green an accountable philosophy with which they will reach carbon neutrality in the next 12 month. They will save 10M KWh per year through PC Power Management. Furthermore programmers can earn additional bonuses if they program in an energy efficiency way.

upcom gives our mobile phones a second life

At the moment 11 million mobile phones with a value of 150 Mio. € lying around somewhere in Austrian households. With this and other very interesting numbers Franz Shwalb-Schich from upcom highlighted the potential and the Win-Win-Situation for industry, environment and people. The vision of the company is to extend the life of each mobile phone by selling them as a second hand product. Each year as an example they collect together with the Caritas such phones through the help of the well known “Wundertüte”.

Don´t miss MoMo #15 next Monday, June 18th! We will take a closer look at sustainability in mobile. How "green" our mobile devices are today? Is there a demand from consumer side? What can we do to make better use of technology from an environmental and cost perspective? What happens to our old phones? Do they end up in a drawer, in the “Wundertüte” or as a second-hand good on landfills in Africa?
