MobileMonday#11: Usability and Design Thinking

2011-06-27 / Burgring 7, 1010 Wien

Last Monday, at our 11th MoMo, we had three keynote speeches on usability and User Experience in the mobile world from Usecon, to Emporia and Microsoft. But to top that off, the MoMo team invited two fantastic experts from Germany Ahmet Emre Acar and Werner Alexander Jansen to introduce the process of "Design Thinking" to a small group of 20 MoMo people.

What is "Design Thinking"?

"It is not necessarily about Design, it is more about identifying needs, creating ideas that help to fill that need and finally come up with a great product.", explains Workshop-Trainer Ahmet Emre Acar.
Participants were asked to work in groups of two and analyze the contents of the other person's wallet. After identifying the real pains and needs, each participant was asked to come up with a perfect wallet for the other person.

Werner Alexander Jansen, Co-Trainer of the workshop appreciates innovations like a digital NFC and RFID wallet, but: "What happens with personal items such as souvenirs or a lucky coin that some people would carry in their wallets?"

"Usually there is a lot of paper prototyping done during the Design thinking process. These prototypes give you a chance to experience if a product might work or not.", says Werner Alexander Jansen.

If it does not work, it is not a big deal: “Design thinking fails. It fails often. And that is perfectly fine: When there are 100 ideas, 90 might fail. But: They fail before they enter the market. That makes the difference”, says Ahmet at the very end of the workshop.

Our next MoMo on June 27th will be all about usability and User Experience in the mobile world. We will have three awesome keynotes:

  • Learn how great user experience drives business success from Usecon (Peter Strassl)
  • Gain insight on a how mobile products need to be designed to reach an elderly target group from Emporia. You will be surprised that there is a lot more than just big letters on a display ;-)
  • Microsoft Austria will allow us a glimpse into the future of user experience with Kinect (Andreas Schabus Microsoft Austria)

At the same time while our keynotes are held at NHM, two fantastic experts that we are flying in from Germany, Ahmet Emre Acar and Werner Alexander Jansen, will hold a workshop at TU Wien for a group of 20 MoMo people to the process of “Design Thinking”: A method from Silicon Valley that teaches to balance analytical and intuitive thinking – the rational and the emotional – for the solution and prototyping process when creating products.

The results of that workshop will be shown to the MoMo audience briefly at the end of this MobileMonday session.

We gladly welcome Verena Krawarik, responsible for Innovationsmanagement @ APA, as our host of the evening.
